Kíléntár, the luxury African fashion brand built on West African craft, has been named winner of the DHL Global Expansion Exporter Award for Africa. Here's the story, in Michelle's own words.
In 2020, I packed the orders myself. Folded the garment, sealed the box, drove it to the DHL counter near us in Lagos, handed it over the desk. That was the whole operation — no warehouse, no team, just me, hoping the parcel made it to wherever it was going, and hoping whoever opened it on the other end loved what was inside.
I'm writing this because that same relationship with DHL has just handed us the DHL Global Expansion Exporter Award for Africa.
So this is not a packing guide. It is not an itinerary. It is closer to a letter — to her, to myself, to anyone who is heading into summer already a little exhausted and needs someone to tell them that they are allowed to spend three hours under a pine tree doing absolutely nothing useful.
THE RECOGNITION
What the award actually recognises.
It sits under DHL's GoTrade programme, part of the DHL Exporters of the Year Awards for Africa. It goes to small and medium businesses across Sub-Saharan Africa that have grown, held up under pressure, and managed to get local production out into international markets properly. We were picked out of hundreds of exporting businesses on the continent. The reason, as they put it to us: we've turned small-batch, hand-made African fashion into something that ships and lands reliably, anywhere in the world.
African fashion isn't a trend passing through. It's a market that competes at the top of global luxury, on its own terms.
Kíléntár · on what the award confirms
THE WOMEN
Every Kíléntár piece starts here.
I can't talk about this without talking about the women who actually make Kíléntár. We're a Nigerian fashion brand at heart, working with around 30 female weavers and dyers, all using organically grown cotton, all doing this by hand — raw fibre through to finished piece. Every garment still leaves Nigeria and goes straight to the customer. No middle warehouse, no distance added between the person who made it and the person who's going to wear it.
That was true in 2020 and it's still true now, at a very different scale. That's the part of this award that means something to me — not that we grew, but that we grew without changing how, or by whom, the work gets done.
THE SHIPPING
A Nigerian fashion brand that ships globally, properly.
I keep coming back to the maths of it. A few parcels a week from a courier counter, to thousands of pieces moving to London, New York, Tokyo, and everywhere in between, with tracking, delivery windows and returns that actually work. If you've ever hesitated to order from a Nigerian fashion brand or an African fashion label because you weren't sure it would arrive, or arrive well — this is us telling you it will.
WHAT THE AWARD INCLUDES
- Executive mentorship from DHL's global leadership team.
- A business expansion grant to fuel the next phase of growth.
- An innovation experience at the DHL Innovation Centre in Dubai.
We're going to use all of it.
TO OUR COMMUNITY
This one belongs to you.
This belongs to the women who weave and dye every piece, and to everyone who bought something from us back when it still shipped from a courier counter. Thank you for believing in this before there was much reason to.

THE AWARD, EXPLAINED
What is the DHL Global Expansion Exporter Award?
It's part of the DHL Exporters of the Year Awards (Africa Edition), run under DHL's GoTrade programme. It recognises small and medium enterprises across Sub-Saharan Africa that have shown exceptional growth, operational resilience and successful market entry by connecting local production to international markets.
Why did Kíléntár win the award?
Out of hundreds of exporting businesses across the continent, Kíléntár was recognised for transforming local, small-batch African fashion into a seamlessly distributed global brand — shipping directly from Nigeria to customers worldwide while preserving heritage, ethical production and authenticity at scale.
Does Kíléntár, as a Nigerian fashion brand, ship worldwide?
Yes. Every Kíléntár garment is made and dispatched directly from Nigeria to doorsteps worldwide, with express international shipping via DHL, reliable delivery windows, real-time tracking and a simple returns process.
When was Kíléntár founded?
Kíléntár was founded in 2020 by Michelle Adepoju in Lagos, Nigeria. What started as a single founder packing orders by hand and dropping them at a DHL counter has grown into an internationally distributed luxury womenswear brand shipping to the UK, US, Nigeria, UAE, Saudi Arabia and 15+ countries worldwide.
Where are Kíléntár garments made?
Every Kíléntár piece is made in Nigeria, by hand, and dispatched directly to the customer worldwide. No middle warehouse, no outsourced production. The same garment that left a weaver's hands in Nigeria arrives at your door.
Who makes Kíléntár pieces?
Around 30 female weavers and dyers, all based in Nigeria, working with organically grown cotton and traditional West African techniques. Every piece goes from raw fibre to finished garment by hand. That has not changed since 2020, regardless of scale.
