Sustainability & Impact

Without compromising on style, sustainability is at the core of our ethos. During her travels across West Africa, Michelle Adepoju was struck by the mastery and passion of artisans, who had inherited their craftsmanship and served as custodians of tradition for generations. Kilentar was born from this desire to uphold and preserve traditional African practices and indigenous techniques, honouring the continent’s richness and diversity. We are guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and are committed to the advancement of the following:

  • Goal 5: Gender Equality.
  • Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.
  • Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

Pillars of Sustainability

Environmental Responsibility
We continuously strive to tread lightly on the planet, reducing waste in our production processes and exploring innovative sustainable solutions. From sourcing materials to packaging and shipping, we're committed to minimising our environmental impact at every stage of the production cycle. We aim to leave a positive legacy for future generations, ensuring that the beauty of West African craftsmanship thrives in harmony with nature.
Ethical Sourcing
and Production
We celebrate the artistry of West African craftsmanship by partnering exclusively with artisans in the region. Our production process prioritises sustainability, sourcing organic cotton and employing natural dyes to minimise our environmental footprint.
Gender Equity
We proudly collaborate with women weavers, dyers, and seamstresses, recognizing their exceptional skill and expertise. Yet, we understand that skill alone is not enough without access and opportunity. Through partnerships, we strive to empower these artisans with resources and avenues to showcase their talent. Our goal is to create high-quality garments while advancing gender equity among our partners.
Limited Release Collections
We take pride in our limited-release collections, dropping only two full collections a year. This deliberate decision reflects our dedication to quality, craftsmanship, and mindful consumption. Each garment is thoughtfully created to be cherished for years to come, fostering a deeper connection between our customers and the communities we celebrate.
Transparent Pricing and Ethical Labour Practices
Our transparent pricing ensures that each purchase directly contributes to the livelihoods of our artisans, particularly our women workers. We believe in fair wages and equitable partnerships, reinforcing our commitment to ethical labour practices. Supporting Kílẹntár means more than investing in a piece of clothing; it means investing in the well-being of communities and the empowerment of women.
